After Hurricane Katrina, Designmatters’ director, students, policy makers and experts in the field researched the ways in which LA could prepare itself for an earthquake.
Their findings will be published in a Sourcebook, a high-profile civic event at the Nokia Plaza in downtown LA, November 14, an online recovery simulation game, and a PSA.
We interviewed Designmatters director, Mariana Amatullo, as well as the creators of the game and the film to talk about how ultimately design matters in the way we prepare citizens to cope with a disaster.

Shake-Up Call - By Commentator Vince Gonzales - Despite being one of the most prepared cities in the world when it comes to earthquakes, LA has one major vulnerability - so-called "killer buildings."
Commentary - By David L. Ulin - We all know earthquakes are a force of nature. But they are a force of identity, as well. Living with the threat of quakes gives us a quintessentially Californian perspective, an appreciation of the ephemeral nature of the world we live in.
Great segment! We have become a society with almost everything at an arms length; it saddens me to think what would happen should something like this happen.
This is very cool. Amazing work from Art Center and Designmatters. Great work Mariana and students!
