If you live in Southern California, one thing you need to be aware of is Earthquakes.

They are a matter of daily life because they are, as of yet, unpredictable. They cause a great deal of damage if they happen near urban areas. All you can do is prepare yourself and your environment in case an earthquake happens in your area.

See images of Los Angeles earthquake damage

There have already been a few big quakes since the Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and the 1989 San Francisco Earthquake, but the experts all still warn that we haven't yet exhausted all of the tension built up in our local faults.

Los Angeles has also seen a few big shake-ups in recent years. Since the 5.0 earthquake in Malibu in 1989 they have been getting stronger each time. The most recent one was a 6.7 in Northridge, 1994. See a chart of L.A. earthquakes since 1920.

Here is a game that can help you test just how well prepared your home is for an earthquake. Just like in life, an earthquake can happen any moment, so see how quickly you can earthquake-proof this virtual living room.

Two myths debunked:
In addition to educating yourself about what you need to know you should also be aware of two long standing myths that are not the best advice for you.

You've probably heard of the triangle of life, there is an email that is making the rounds that sounds very authoritative on the subject, but this is NOT applicable outside of Third World countries that do not have the strict building codes we are lucky to have here in California.
