<p>From<a href="http://www.iconla.com/fineart/co-gallery.php"> Icon LA: </a>Frank W. Ockenfels 3 has photographed advertising campaigns, movie posters, television galleries, and over 200 album covers and press shoots for musicians from David Bowie to No Doubt and Willie Nelson. His exhibition "Without Filter" will feature a selection from the 15 portrait sessions he shot with Bowie as well as his signature scrapbook series of collaged photo contact sheets and drawn imagery. The show will also include an extensive collection of portraiture from throughout Ockenfels' career. Clark Oshin Gallery's non-traditional exhibition space at The Icon lends itself to Ockenfels' experimental nature and the show itself will reflect that quality.</p>

<p>This summer, emotion gave way to decency as Americans on both sides of the political spectrum took aim at their ideological foes, ripping into the health care arguments with a viciousness usually reserved for personal matters. But what is it about health care, as opposed to, say, <em>war</em>, that hits such a strong chord in us? Zocalo's forum will no doubt give us the most well-rounded of answers.</p>

<p>From <a href="http://zocalopublicsquare.org/upcoming.php?event_id=351">Zocalo:</a> What is it about healthcare that moves us so? Every president since Franklin Roosevelt has struggled with universal healthcare; the last major victory toward it came over 40 years ago, when Lyndon Johnson created Medicare and Medicaid. Since then, presidents' efforts either made small advances -- like George W. Bush's expansion of retiree benefits -- or suffered overwhelming defeat, as Bill Clinton did. This year, Barack Obama has been haunted by past failures and hampered by the rancor of public debate. James A. Morone, co-author of "The Heart of Power: Health and Politics in the Oval Office," visits Zócalo to explain universal healthcare reform past and present, and why it so incenses Americans. </p>

Help prove them wrong by taking part in this year's Great Los Angeles Walk, where we will be making our way from downtown to the great Pacific blue.</p><br /><br/>

<p><strong>Hoping to volunteer this weekend? Get involved with the environment.</strong></p>

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/get-involved-with-the-environment.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/assets/images/beachcleanup.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/get-involved-for-veterans-day.html"><big><strong>Ways to Help the Planet</strong></big></a> - KCET invites you to serve your community through service. Our weekly Get Involved page features ways for you to connect with organizations in need of a helping hand. </p><br /><br/>

<p><strong>Other things to do and see this weekend:</strong></p>

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/josh-melnick-and-lauri-firstenberg.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/assets/images/sciarc-friendstofriends-i.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/josh-melnick-and-lauri-firstenberg.html"><big><strong>Josh Melnick and Lauri Firstenberg</strong></big></a> - Sci Arc is hosting Friends of Friends, a discussion series that will provide a platform for prominent Los Angeles artists to share their thoughts on the exhibition, as well as discuss the L.A. art scene at large.</p><br /><br/>

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/rolling-stone-photographer-frank-ockenfels-opening.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/bowie_I.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/rolling-stone-photographer-frank-ockenfels-opening.html"><big><strong>Rock 'n' Roller Frank Ockenfels' Photo Exhibit</strong></big></a> - The photographer will feature work from throughout his extensive career with rock stars, and, sadly, we have to admit that looking at fantastic pictures of famous people still floats our boats. Oh, the shame! Might as well embrace it. </p><br /><br/>

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/family-drawing-hour-at-the-getty.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/coloring_I.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/family-drawing-hour-at-the-getty.html"><big><strong>Family Drawing Hour at the Getty</strong></big></a> - On a nice Saturday, the Getty is calling your name, providing you with a great view and means to entertain the kids. The entertainment? Guided drawing workshops.</p><br /><br/>

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/moca-30th-anniversary-party.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/moca_I.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/moca-30th-anniversary-party.html"><big><strong>MOCA 30th Anniversary Party</strong></big></a> - Yeah, it's members only, but if you've got the card, make your way downtown. All those at MOCA are, after all, in quite good spirits after dodging bankruptcy in what has turned out to be one of those most difficult years in museum history.</p><br /><br />

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/camera-assassins.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/assets/images/wiseguys-cameraassassins-bw-i.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/camera-assassins.html"><big><strong>Camera Assassins</a></big></strong> - Looking for an event where you are asked to take bizarre photographs and assassinate fellow Angelinos? Well, look no further. Wiseguys have found a way to combine these two favorite pass times into one all-new game.</p><br /><br />

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/mary-poppins-at-the-ahmanson.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/poppins_I.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/mary-poppins-at-the-ahmanson.html"><big><strong>Mary Poppins at the Ahmanson</strong></big></a> - Sure things rarely come as sure as this, as the Ahmanson recreates an award-winning musical that has already made its way around the worldwide circuit.</p><br /><br />

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/zocalo-why-is-the-healthcare-debate-so-nasty.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/healthcare_I.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/zocalo-why-is-the-healthcare-debate-so-nasty.html"><big><strong>Zocalo: Why is the Healthcare Debate So Nasty?</strong></big></a> - What is it about health care, as opposed to, say, <em>war</em>, that hits such a strong chord in us? Zocalo's forum will no doubt give us the most well-rounded of answers.</p><br /><br />

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/road-to-freedom-photographs-of-the-civil-rights-movement-1956-1968.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/civilrights_I.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/road-to-freedom-photographs-of-the-civil-rights-movement-1956-1968.html"><big><strong>Road to Freedom: Photographing Civil Rights </strong></big></a> - The images can and will stand on their own, so the Skirball's added commentary will only heighten the power of an exhibition so riveting, you might even forget it's educational.</p><br /><br />

<p><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/iotacenter-salon.html"><img src="http://kcet.org/local/events/assets/images/dma-abstract-i.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 5px 0pt 0pt; float: left;" height="76" width="115" /></a><a href="http://kcet.org/local/events/2009/11/iotacenter-salon.html"><big><strong>Iotacenter Salon</strong></big></a> - In the mood for some experimental abstract video? Aren't we all. Lucky for us, this week the talented grads at UCLA's Design Media Arts program are curating a show to meet all our abstraction needs.</p><br /><br />
