The Autry National Center presents "Carbon Black" by Terry Gomez (Comanche). Native Voices at the Autry is America's leading Native American theater company. It kicks off its 10th anniversary season with Carbon Black: a gripping, suspenseful, and enigmatic psychological drama portraying a mother/son relationship held hostage by agoraphobia and media-inspired fear.

Inspired by an outbreak of crime in the playwright's own neighborhood, as well as the lingering culture of fear that has grown up in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Carbon Black illustrates what happens when life is distorted through the lens of local television news, and what the ramifications for individuals and society at large can be when the reaction to crime and violence, real or perceived, is denial and solitary confinement.

The Autry National Center presents over 250 baskets selected from the world's largest collection of Native American basketry from the Southwest Museum of the American Indian. This exhibition features Native American baskets from 11 different regions, representing more than 100 cultures, from across North America. Ranging in size from small Pomo feather baskets to massive Apache ollas. You will see how the materials, techniques, and designs vary regionally, as do the distinctive styles of individual artists. This display of historic and contemporary baskets, combined with multimedia elements, tells the story of a living art through the voices of the weavers themselves.

The Autry has invited thirteen contemporary basketweavers to serve as consultants in research and planning and will purchase a basket from each consultant to add to the permanent collection. The exhibition will be presented at the Autry's Museum of the American West in Griffith Park. Both institutions are part of the Autry National Center, an intercultural organization dedicated to expanding our understanding of the diverse peoples of the American West.

The exhibition opens November 7, 2009, and runs through May 30, 2010. Visit the Autry Center's website for more information.

How might buildings bust a move if they got out on the dance floor? Thursday, the MOCA attempts to answer that age-old question. The Slanguage art collective's teen break-dancing group Dub City Tribe will take on brutalist architecture (those muscular, concrete high-rises peppered throughout Southern California's cityscape). The group's choreography both explores the characteristics of these massive structures, and provides commentary on our relationship to them.

From the website: For the third installment of their three-month Engagement Party residency at MOCA, artist collective Slanguage presents Brutalism: A Dance Performance featuring Dub City Tribe. The performance will examine the implications of Brutalism, a mid-20th-century architectural style characterized by massive or monolithic forms, usually of poured concrete and typically unrelieved by exterior decoration, within the context of Southern California's urban landscape. Through choreographed movement, the collective's teen break-dancing group Dub City Tribe will play with the monumentality that is central to the Brutalist aesthetic, evoke the Brutalist architecture of Los Angeles and Wilmington, California (where Slanguage is based), and explore the consequences of the "concrete jungles" it has yielded. Slanguage DJs will spin genre-skipping sets to create a soundscape for the performance, collaborating dancers and musicians will also perform, and audience members will be encouraged to participate in a nonstop dance-a-thon-style competition.

It's rare to be able to step into the mind of a creative genius just as his career culminates, but that's exactly what Los Angeles Magazine has stumbled upon as it interviews Mad Men Creator Matthew Weiner this Wednesday. The show is hugely popular, perhaps one of the most successful ever, and for only $20 you can find some answers to the millions of questions this mysterious show engenders. Cough it up.

From Writers Bloc Presents: "Writers Bloc and Los Angeles Magazine present Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, in conversation with Mary Melton, Editor in Chief of Los Angeles Magazine. Matthew Weiner knows how to tell a story--he did, after all, work on The Sopranos, and has created one of the most satisfying television experiences around. Hear his stories, his challenges, and his ideas. Perhaps a cast member will turn up. Mary Melton is the new Editor of Los Angeles Magazine. This is the first in a new series of Writers Bloc/Los Angeles Magazine discussions that will take place in and around Los Angeles."

You can help the PetSave Foundation, a rabbit rescue organization, with the daily care (feeding, cleaning, grooming, socializing) of rescued rabbits at their shelter. This is a great project for families!

Most of the work is cleaning, so be sure to bring work gloves and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and wear closed-toed shoes. Volunteers for this project must be at least 5 years of age and pre-teens must be accompanied by a parent. For more information, visit L.A. Works.

Another way for you to help animals is to visit the Gibbon Conservation Center in Santa Clarita. Come see some of the world's great acrobats -- the loudest land mammals that Mother Nature ever created. The Gibbon Conservation Center was established to ensure the preservation, propagation and survival of all gibbons in the wild and in captivity. Most of the gibbons at the Center are on the highly endangered list.

You can contribute your time and energy to assist in feeding, data collection, and maintenance of Gibbons. You will gain experience caring for primates, and you'll contribute to the preservation of an endangered species. For more information, visit the Gibbon Center's website.

The Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is always in need of volunteers. Right now they're looking for help in the Animal Assisted Therapy and Foster Care programs. Through the Animal Assisted Therapy Program, volunteers take their own companion animal to visit various facilities such as: children's hospitals, retirement centers and AIDS hospices. The Los Angeles Animal Assisted Therapy Program was started in 1986 with the goal of promoting the human-animal bond and enriching the physical and psychological well-being of people confined to hospitals and other institutions.

Foster parents take care of bottle babies, kittens, puppies, adult cats or dogs and those with special needs. While fostering, volunteers provide their time and love while the SPCA covers the food and veterinary care. It's a hands-on way to make a difference and save a life. Visit the LA SPCA's volunteer page for more information.

Most of us are familiar with the iconic and far-reaching animation of Fred Wolf. Who doesn't remember the collegiate owl who couldn't wait to bite into the center of that tootsie pop? The Silent Movie Theater celebrates Wolf with a film retrospective. Following the screening, a Q&A with Wolf himself.

From the website: "Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?" The world may never know -- but the man behind this classic commercial does, and will be here to explain it all. Animator Fred Wolf collaborated with Harry Nilsson to create The Point, with Frank Zappa to produce 200 Motels, and with Peter Yarrow to make Puff The Magic Dragon. He's the man behind the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series, Marlo Thomas' TV special Free To Be You And Me, the animated feature The Mouse And His Child, and won an Oscar for his short The Box. He even hand-animated the iconic opening sequence to The Flintstones! Animation historian Jerry Beck will present a tribute to Wolf, with rare clips from his movies, TV shows and vintage 1960s commercials, and present a live on stage interview with Wolf himself, as he discusses his career in film, and his relationships with his famous collaborators. The first 100 admissions will receive a free DVD of The Point, Fred Wolf's classic collaboration with Harry Nilsson -- and every admission will receive a free Tootsie Pop!
