This week SoCal Connected took a look at the Ocean Defenders, Huntington Beach-based group of volunteer SCUBA divers dedicated to removing derelict fishing gear from the ocean floor. Over in at KCET Local, the newest installment of the Departures series launched, this time looking at the Los Angeles River. Get Involved smells an aquatic trend, so here are some ways to get involved with your local waterways.
Every 3rd Saturday of the month, the folks at Adopt-a-Beach sponsor a 30 minute beach clean-up in Long Beach: "You are welcome to show up by yourself or with your group. Average attendance each month is 200 participants and all ages are well represented."
The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is looking for volunteers to "help educate thousands of visitors each year about the local Southern California marine environment. Volunteers serve in many capacities in front of the public and behind the scenes. Every job done by a volunteer contributes to the Aquarium's mission and our goal is to provide volunteers with meaningful experiences."
The Friends of the Los Angeles River (featured on Departures: Los Angeles River offers a broad range of ways to connect from the River, from La Gran Limpieza (The Great LA River CleanUp) to a bicycle tour of the Glendale Narrows.
