RAND Corp. Book Sale; Plus Free Ayn
By Jeremy Rosenberg
April 29, 2009
The RAND Corporation is offering various books for sale at 40% discounts from the titles' respective cover prices.
None of the sale publications are new releases, and while it's arguable that some might already be dated (one title from 2002 is teased as offering "next steps in the U.S. campaign to defeat al Qaeda and combat terrorism"), many of the reads are clearly evergreen.

TTLA is sorry to report that this blog is not in Beverly Hills this week, observing first-hand the goings-on at the Milken Institute's Global Conference 2009. The Milken site has video and other info. And via one search engine, here's early news coverage.

Sure, it's not exactly SoCal-specific; not exactly a think tank; and at five-weeks-old, not exactly breaking news...
But still, TTLA couldn't resist passing along a few of the insights from the March 15,2009 edition (Vol. 105, No. 3) of The Wealth Report (Motto: "Leading Edge Insights into the World of the Wealthy"), a publication of the Manhattan-based Luxury Institute (Motto: "The Knowledge of Luxury, The Luxury of Knowledge").

April 15, 2009
No Centers or Institutes today. No joints named via acronym, or after a funder.
And no essaying today on the old favorite topic of, "What is a think tank?"
Instead, we pass along news of Stupid Fun Club, which according to news reports, will be an "entertainment think tank" as content creator.

By Jeremy Rosenberg
April 5, 2009

The L.A. Times print edition featured recently a front page story about this proposed new downtown hotel / office complex.
From the renderings, it looks to TTLA's untrained eyes the crowns of these 40- and 60-story buildings look to be yet another example of the power of Municipal Code Sec. 57.118.12.
That's the 35-year-old insertion titled “Emergency Helicopter Landing Facility."
“Each building," the code reads ,"shall have a rooftop emergency helicopter landing facility in a location approved by the [Fire] Chief.”

By Jeremy Rosenberg
April 2, 2009
Last fall, TTLA traveled down to an office complex in Irvine and paid a visit to the Ayn Rand Institute.
During a free-wheeling conversation about, in great part, free enterprise and the ongoing financial crisis, ARI president Dr. Yaron Brook brought up an idea that has been popping up elsewhere since:
In short, that idea is summed up by Brook's suggested pitch: "Buy a house, get a green card."
