Meet the Ferals! Plus, More Definitions of Tanks
By Jeremy Rosenberg
October 29, 2008

We gotta put city pride aside and own up, early on in this blog's run: Los Angeles ain't home to nearly as many think tanks as, say, Washington, D.C.
Fear not, though. This blog will be checking in with tanks in the nation's capitol, abroad, and elsewhere nationally. We'll do this particularly regarding matters that directly affect L.A.; and other times, just because, really.
For example, who in a Presidential election state of mind wouldn't want to know: "How Much Would You Pay in Taxes?," which ran as an infographic in venerable Parade magazine Sunday October 12, 2008 and is culled from the work of the Tax Policy Center, a collaborative tank located in D.C.
Back now to the Southland. When considering our local tanks, here's this blog's early attempt to classify the origins of the various institutions and organizations that we'll be hearing from in TTLA.

A think tanker was kind enough to provide this blog with a copy of both the "2008 Global Go To Think Tanks Report" awards nomination packet, as well as the accompanying "Policy Research and Civic Engagement Impact Survey."
Sound boring? Hardly. The latter is an 18-page document put together by Dr. James G. McGann that features 52 questions asked of think tank workers in the U.S. and abroad.
The former is 21 pages mostly consisting of names of well-regarded tanks, divided into ten categories such as "Best New Think Tank (established in the last 3 years," "Best Use of the Internet to Communicate Programs and Research (Global)," and of course, the intellectual Granddaddy of Them All, "Think Tank of the Year - Top Think Tank in the World."

Hey, KCET-heads...
Let's get started.
If you're reading this blog, then our hope is that you already know more about the Los Angeles - and beyond - think tank scene than your nascent Think Tank L.A. blogger.
Which means - this blog would be delighted to have your help.
