POD: Flickr Our Memorial Day

By Yoli Martinez

Today is the start the long Memorial Day weekend. Angelenos everywhere bring out their barbecues, sit at picnic tables, laugh over ice creams cones and go to parades.

Memorial Day has become an excuse for retail car shopping, blow out sales, and weekend trips. But this national holiday's original purpose was to honor, respect, and remember fallen American soldiers.

These are the soldiers who made this laid back and peaceful weekend possible. After spending time with friends and family and buying that 60% off plasma T.V., remember to go honor the veterans who defended this country in its time of need.

POD: What can we lose?

By Yoli Martinez
May 15, 2009

In an attempt to reduce California's huge deficit, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed two budget plans to lawmakers. The L.A. Times reports that both budgets choices include sever cuts that would result in reducing the public school year by seven days, "releasing thousands of inmates from prison and packing others into county jails, cutting off healthcare to more than 200,000 children and drilling for oil off the Santa Barbara coast."

Here in Pixeltown, we really do believe that a picture is worth a thousand words. And pictures of places that would be lost in an attempt to reduce the deficit, are literary worth billions of dollars.

What could happen to this beautiful beach view if more drilling is allowed? What are the environmental consequences?

Every Sunday a crowd gathers in Hollywood to dance to the best in real house music at DEEP. One of LA's internationally successful house DJs, Marques Wyatt (who gave birth to this weekly,) can be heard most Sundays. DEEP's crowd resembles more of a melting pot than typically seen in Los Angeles and they're there to dance to the soulful sounds of Wyatt and his world-class guest DJs. [full story]
