Howdy neighbor! Here is a look at stories making the rounds of the SoCal Web.
1 - The economy is in free fall, but, on the bright side, so is the price of gas.
From LAist:
In five days, gas prices have dropped more than 10-cents. On October 22 a regular gallon of gas was $3.25, 20-cents less than a week prior to then. Today, the price for the Los Angeles area averages out to $3.137. [full story]Permalink Discuss

Pixeltown once had a dream of a Los Angeles made of electricity, polygons and dots. (Or maybe we are flashing back to recent sci-fi fare like The Matrix, or The Thirteenth Floor, or select sections of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?) Either way, our dream comes slightly closer to reality this week with the 11th installment of the Freewaves Festival of Experimental Media Art. Titled "HollyWould," the festival brings its unique mix of "culturally relevant, uncensored experimental video and digital art" to literal street level on October 9th, this by insinuating itself sci-fi-style into an iconic strip of LA - Hollywood Blvd. between Wilcox Avenue to Orange Drive.

I've had occasion to sit on more than one panel about "online community" and one of my best laugh lines during presentations has always been "Online community is people... just like Soylent Green." I was speaking from a very specific place back then, working for companies who at best saw their online communities as a raw material for their advertising operations. (At worst, the users were freeloaders snacking for free on valuable bandwidth.) But we're looking to try something different for KCET Local. The first step is to invite you to Pixeltown.
