Bring Back Shoulder Pads

By Ophelia Chong
May 31, 2009

I had shoulder pads way back in the late eighties. Big wide ones that made a defensive tackle look weak. My pads were like wings on a 747, wide and demanded your attention because you just might get sideswiped.

Restless sleep, tossing and turning like a leaf in a storm, I roll from one side to the other hoping that some thought would lull me to sleep.

Remembrance Day

By Ophelia Chong
May 22, 2009

This Monday May 25th is Memorial Day, a day of honoring our fallen heroes. I grew up in Canada, the day that we would honor our war dead is November 11th. It became a day or remembrance in November 1919. - the Armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the signing by the Germans at the end of WWI. We would pin a red poppy to our jacket lapels, that was purchased from a Veteran selling them at the mall or on the streets.

When I turn 80, will there still be a Facebook? And if there is, will I have a gazillion posts? What will it be like to go back a few decades on Facebook and see what I was doing?

Secrets in the Mail

By Ophelia Chong
May 15, 2009

The mail today contained flyers, a pair of shoes, and enticements to try a new credit card or magazine subscription. The luxury of having stuff brought to my door is not taken for granted - I am grateful that I don't have to venture out everyday to get bills and junk mail.

May 12, 2009

Are you one of the roaming bands of the "Laid Off"?
Ronin: A ronin (浪人 ,rōnin?) was a samurai with no lord or master during the feudal period (1185-1868) of Japan. A samurai became masterless from the ruin or fall of his master, or after the loss of his master's favor or privilege. The word rōnin literally means "drifting person". The term originated in the Nara and Heian periods, when it referred to a serf who had fled or deserted his master's land. It then came to be used for a samurai who had lost his master. - wikipedia

The Not So Great Wall

By Ophelia Chong
May 1, 2009

A few years back I was flying over the city of Phoenix, AZ, I looked down and I saw a city of walls punctuated with square patches of green. In a city surrounded by desert scrub they walled themselves off from nature and each other. Walls are symbolic of keeping one side away from the other, The Berlin Wall, The Great Wall of China, fire walls, emotional walls.
