Off the Grid

I don't like quiet. I like having the television on while I work. It's not distracting, it's soothing.

I work virtually. My clients are in Boston, New York, and across town. My world is a desk, a set of computers, the television and my garden. It's an endless universe, I travel around the world in a flash of key strokes and clicks on the remote control. I am Aladdin on a magic carpet that flies and hovers over the most interesting stops on my journey.

Do I get lonely? Not really. If I want to hear a conversation I go over to my Twitter or if I want to send a shout to my friends, I go over to my Facebook. I am never alone.

When I do need to slip away from the electric vibrations, I set outside to the garden and just stare out. I unsnap the clasps and let my eyes wander over real dimensional fields of color, I listen to the hum of hummingbird wings and the buzzing bees. I am never off the ground, but I am off the grid.

After all this time, I think you got it right. I am adopting your business model. At least this way I can trust my boss!

I'm starting keep my social network to a minimal as more and more people I know are getting on Facebook and Twitter. It is nice to know when I can pop in and never missing a beat.

If I didn't have my cycling, I would probably go insane with all the work around me.

Ophelia: That's so interesting, that you feel Facebook is company..I see everything coming out of a computer as impersonal, shadows of the real thing, or not real things at all. But I have to say, with Facebook I've had more conversations with cousins than I've ever had in our lives. That's real for sure. Though I definitely need to go 'off the grid' to do any writing - i.e., work. thanks for the 'connection!'

hi jere

Hi erin,
I have limited access to "humans" where I work, so the snippets of conversations I have online are the few moments that i get to share. Once I am offline, i go out and mingle with friends. Facebook is one way I get to stay in touch, it's an easy in and out form of touching base with the outside world. :O) ophelia

"I am never off the ground, but I am off the grid." Nice line.

Thanks Alex. :O)
