Tuesday, September 15 (10:30 -11:00 p.m.) The Big Squeeze is a joyful leap into the heart of Texas music. And where there's music there's usually some grilling going on. That's why Herminio Ramirez builds a stage right in the tiny kitchen of their Houston home for his son John. From the urban barrios of Houston to the colonials along the U.S.-Mexican border, legacies fueled by the passion-stirring combination of family, friends and food, is being passed along. In The Big Squeeze, we follow 16 year old John Ramirez and other young musicians as they do battle at the statewide accordion throw down.

Wednesday, September 16 (10:00 -11:00 p.m) Voces "Celia The Queen" is a documentary that explores the life and legacy of a woman whose voice symbolized the soul of a nation and captured the hearts of fans worldwide. Erupting onto the Cuban music scene as the lead singer for La Sonora Matancera, Celia Cruz broke down barriers of racism and sexism. This film shows the diversity of the people whose lives she touched, from stars such as Quincy Jones, Andy Garcia, and Wyclef Jean, to ordinary people all over the world. The story traces Celia's exile from her beloved Cuba until her death in 2003. A co-presentation with National Black Programming Consortium.

Thursday, September 17 (10:00 - 11:00 p.m.) Voces "Antonia Pantoja: Presente" tells the story of educator-organizer Antonia Pantoja, founder of the New York-based advocacy organization, Aspira. A passionate, indomitable leader, Pantoja worked with Puerto Rican "immigrant-citizens" to fight against second-class citizenship and to secure a bilingual voice. Through passionate personal testimony, never-before-seen home movies, archival footage and the work of visual artist Juan Sanchez, the feisty Antonia Pantoja guides viewers through the Puerto Rican community's struggles and triumphs.

Monday, September 21 (10:00 - 11:00 p.m.) Voces "Bracero Stories" Bracero explores the personal experiences of five former "guest workers" in the controversial U.S.-Mexican bracero program, which granted temporary work contracts to several million Mexican laborers between 1942 and 1964. Their interwoven stories, illustrated with archival materials, create a composite narrative of the bracero experience. Interviews with other participants in the program assess its effectiveness and lasting impact. The discussions mirror and inform current concerns about illegal immigration and the role of imported labor in U.S. economic development.

Saturday, September 26 (9:00 - 10:30 p.m.) P.O.V. 2010 "Made In L.A." focuses on Los Angeles, now the country's center for apparel manufacturing. However, many of its factories bear an eerie resemblance to New York's early 20th-century sweatshops. "Made in L.A." follows the remarkable journey of three Latina immigrants working in L.A.'s garment factories and their struggle for self-empowerment as they wage a three-year battle to bring a major clothing retailer to the negotiating table. This intimate film offers a rare and poignant glimpse into the "other" California, where immigrants in many industries toil long hours for sub-minimum wages, fighting for an opportunity in a new country.

Saturday, September 26 (10:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.) Independent Lens "Our Disappeared / Nuestros Desaparecidos" tells the story of a brutal regime through experiences of director Juan Mandelbaum. Through a casual Google search, Juan finds out that Patricia, a long lost girlfriend from Argentina, is among the thousands who were kidnapped, tortured and then "disappeared" by the military during the 1976-1983 dictatorship. Juan embarks on a journey to find out what happened to her and others he knew who disappeared and re-examines his own choices. Using rare archival footage he evokes the dreams for a revolution that would transform Argentina. As he shares stories told by parents, siblings, friends and children of the disappeared, Juan grieves the tragic losses and shows that when brutal regimes attack the fabric of a country with great impunity, the suffering lasts for generations.

Friday, October 2 (10:00 - 11:00 p.m.) Voces "The Golden Age" documents one season of the highly competitive "Golden Age" soccer league in Corona Park, Queens, N.Y. The teams are made up of former World Cup players (now middle-aged) from Central and South America. These incredibly skilled players, their former glory a fond memory, muscles creaking, hairlines receding and waistlines expanding, now work as window washers, traders, electricians; but the weekend is theirs. The game is slightly different but the passion remains.

Tuesday, October 6 (10:00 - 11:00 p.m.)Voces "Special Circumstances" At 16, Héctor Salgado was arrested and tortured by Pinochet's forces. By 20, Héctor was without a country, living in exile in the U.S. Special Circumstances follows Héctor as he returns to Chile almost 30 years later, camera in hand, to confront the perpetrators and his former captors, looking for answers and justice.

In the process, the film takes an unflinching look at U.S. foreign policy in Latin America in the '70s and the legacy of Pinochet with which Chile still struggles today.

Monday, October 12 (9:00 - 11:00 p.m.) Latin Music USA is a film American music. Fusions of Latin sounds with jazz, rock, country, rhythm and blues. Music with deeper roots and broader reach than most people realize, it's a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across five decades and across musical genres to portray the rich mix of sounds created by Latinos and embraced by all. The first hour, "Bridges," traces the rise of Latin jazz and the explosion of the mambo and the cha cha chá as they sweep the US from east to West. Latin music infiltrates R&B and rock and roll through the 1960s. In the second hour, "The Salsa Revolution," Puerto Ricans and other Latinos in New York reinvent the Cuban son and the Puerto Rican plena, adding elements from soul and jazz to create salsa, which becomes a defining rhythm for Latinos the world over.

Thursday, October 15 (8:30 - 10:00 p.m.) Cafe De Los Maestros is a celebration of the tango that gathers together tango directors, musicians and singers from the 1940s for an unforgettable series of fiery and passionate performances.

Thursday, October 15 (10:00 - 11:00 p.m.) Concierto para Mendez centers on the life of trumpeter Rafael Mendez. A native of Mexico, he made his home in Los Angeles for many years and was a beloved role model for several generations of young musicians. Placido Domingo says, "Rafael Mendez was an artist who inspired millions through his appearances in film, television and in concerts around the world." Part concert, part opera, part oratorio and part film score, Concierto para Mendez is a multi-media performance which features four operatic voices, a solo trumpeter, a narrator (portrayed by mezzo-soprano Suzanna Guzman), and the L.A. Opera Orchestra, conducted by Richard Kaufman. Concierto para Mendez was created by composer Lee Holdridge and librettist Richard Sparks, and was performed by L.A. Opera.

Thursday, October 29 (10:00 - 11:00 p.m.)Voces "Tito Puente: The King of Latin Music" Of all the musicians who have contributed to the popularity of Latin music, none is more recognized than the man known simply as "The King," Tito Puente. His family, friends and colleagues all pay homage here: Bill Cosby, Marc Anthony, Armand Assante, Geraldo Rivera, Jimmy Smits, Paquito D'Rivera and many more.

The life of this influential bandleader, percussionist and composer - and one of the most charismatic performers of all time - is recalled through archival footage and interviews as well as excerpts from one of his last concerts.

Monday, November 2 (10:00 - 11:00 p.m.)Voces "Soy Andina" tells the story of two women raised in different worlds: an immigrant folk dancer from the Andes, and a modern dancer from Queens, NY, who return to Peru to reconnect with their culture. After 15 years in New York, Nelida Silva returns to fulfill a lifelong dream and host the fiesta patronal -- a celebration of dance, music, and rituals from Incan times. Meanwhile Cynthia Paniagua, a dancer raised in Queens, embarks on her own journey, determined to "quench a burning desire to know the real Peru, to unearth the mystery of the dances." Soy Andina is an exuberant cross-cultural road trip, yet its theme is universal: a yearning for roots and connection in turbulent times.

Wednesday, November 18 (10:00 - 11:00 p.m.)Voces "Dream Havana" In August 1994, more than 30,000 Cubans attempted to leave the island by sea. Two writers, friends since adolescence, are faced with a choice: continue struggling with the hardships of the island or brave the open water on a homemade raft. Ernesto Santana chooses Cuba; Jorge Mota, chooses the sea. This is the story of their struggles, their successes and the friendship that binds them across the distance, from Chicago to Havana.

Upon graduating LMU, Salinas embarked on a journey of community service. She quickly found her way to HOPE, Hispanas Organized for Political Equality, a leading organization that promotes the advancement of Latinas in government and business. Salinas is recognized as a HOPE founder and served as its President. Under her leadership, the organization tackled issues involving access to health care, education, and economic development. She was honored by the Los Angeles County Commission for Women for advocating women's rights.

Realizing that access to capital remains a big challenge for minority communities, Salinas has also worked for economic empowerment. After the LA riots, she assisted Rebuild LA in developing a community loan fund. Today, Salinas is a board member of Promerica Bank, the first Hispanic owned business bank opened in more than 30 years in Los Angeles County. She brings her expertise in finance and serves on its Audit and Loan Committee.

Salinas's community service has included working on numerous boards such as the LMU's Mexican American Alumni Association, Angeles Girl Scout Council, and San Gabriel Valley American Red Cross. In 2003, Maria and Raul were recognized by the United Latino Fund for their outstanding service to the Latino community.

Aside from her professional and community achievements, Salinas's most important role is being the mother to her four boys: Alejandro, Nicholas, Francisco and Gabriel. Together with Raul, they are active members of their children's activities which includes scouting, sports, and music to name a few.

Raul F. Salinas

Strengthening the voices of underserved communities is a fundamental objective in giving back to the community for Raul F. Salinas. That's why, along with wife Maria S. Salinas [LINK HERE], the couple has made it their mission to give back to the community through their work with nonprofit organizations that aim to fill voids in our communities. Together, they have advocated for the advancement of women and minorities in business, government and education.

He is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University (LMU) and received his juris doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in 1985. With more than 20 years of experience in law, he is the Managing Partner of Adorno Yoss Alvarado & Smith's Los Angeles office, the nation's largest minority-owned law firm. Salinas's extensive experience includes representing public and private sector clients in a wide array of complex business, employment, public law matters and various civil litigation proceedings.

A product of South Central Los Angeles and raised in South Gate, Salinas also serves as its City Attorney. Through his office, he has assisted city leaders to bring pride back to that community.

Salinas's philanthropic efforts originate with a sense of responsibility to give back to his community. Salinas served as President of LMU's Mexican American Alumni Association and was instrumental in creating an endowment fund for scholarships for Latino students. In 1998, he received the Alumni Role Model Award from LMU's Mexican American Alumni Association, and in 2008, received the prestigious Los Angeles Leaders Award from LMU. He is a founder of the California Hispanic Corporate Council Leadership Institute, an organization whose mission is to increase minority and women representation in senior management positions in the corporate sector.

Salinas is also a member of the Governing Board of White Memorial Hospital in Boyle Heights. He has played an instrumental role in the growth of the hospital both in achieving fundraising milestones and has been at the forefront of quality care initiatives. In 2001, the hospital recognized Salinas as Man of the Year for his work in the community.

Salinas has served on numerous nonprofit boards such as Los Angeles Universal Preschool, East LA YMCA, East LA Classic Theater and San Gabriel Valley Boy Scout Council.

"Gratitude I have for the inspiration that others have provided to me in
the past, motivates me to give back to my community."

From his early days as a as a staff attorney of the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice representing the Latino community on matters related to voting rights and districts in the mid-1970s, to his current role presiding in the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles, Judge Rudolph A. Diaz has paved the way for other Latinos to strike the gavel.

Career milestones are plentiful. From 1992 to 1994, Judge Diaz served as Chairman of the Presiding Judges of the twenty-one Los Angeles County Municipal Courts. In 1994, Judge Diaz was named the first Latino judge to be elected as President of the California Judges Association.

The war on drugs and overcrowded jails also steered Judge Diaz's career to be a part of the historic creation of Drug Courts in 1993, which specifically handled non-violent drug offenders. Judge Diaz's early involvement with the Drug Courts led to his success in becoming the Chairman of the Los Angeles County Oversight Committee on Drug Courts, a position he still holds today. He is also currently on the Los Angeles County Narcotics and Dangerous Drug Commission since being appointed by the Board of Supervisors in 1994.

In 1995, Judge Diaz was a Founding Member of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals and served on its Board of Directors. He was on the Association's National Institute on Drug Courts faculty and also served on the faculty of the National Justice Management Institute. In 2000, Judge Diaz became a Superior Court Judge and elected an assignment to the Juvenile Delinquency Courts. He served as the Supervising Judge of the Eastlake Juvenile Court for over 6 years. He initiated the Juvenile Drug Court Program at Eastlake, and also provided leadership in establishing other drug courts in other courts in Los Angeles County.

"The voices of immigrant children and adults should not be silenced just
because they have yet to learn English. When a child's home language and
culture is not accepted or respected, that child feels valueless. Schools
are suppose to be safe havens and therefore should not continue to give
these messages of non-acceptance to non-English speaking children."

- Dr. Gay Q. Yuen

Dr. Gay Q. Yuen's involvement in education was a direct result of her own educational experience as a 1st-grade student at Castelar Elementary School in Los Angeles' Chinatown. Although she had just arrived from Hong Kong and knew little English, teachers often scolded and forbid her from speaking her native tongue at school, contributing to her sense of confusion and alienation growing up.

Now, Dr. Yuen has made it her life's mission to make the educational experience of immigrant children a positive one. She's a professor of California State University's Charter College of Education, where Dr. Yuen directs the Pacific Rim Institute. Dr. Yuen is also one of Southern California's first bilingual Cantonese educators and regarded as a leading authority of bilingual education, second-language development, and minority education. Throughout her 30-year career, Dr. Yuen has instructed elementary school students to graduate students, coordinated and managed bilingual programs for LAUSD and the Alhambra Unified School District, and was instrumental in drafting the writing standards that has helped guide the education and assessment of students and teachers, bilingual teacher certification standards, and EL standards for instruction.

In addition to her professional work, Dr. Yuen volunteers her time and resources to community organizations such as Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP), where she raised funds for scholarships for Asian American students, Asian Youth Center (AYC), East West Players and the Chinese American Museum of Los Angeles (CAM). She has also served on national and state professional organizations such as Asian Pacifics in Higher Education (APAHE), California Associate for Asian-Pacific Education (CAFABE) and National Association for Asian and Pacific Education (NAAPAE). Dr. Yuen was appointed to the Los Angeles Mayor's Council of Education Advisors to help lower dropout rates and truancy in the public schools.

Dr. Yuen was recognized with the "Teachers Making a Difference Award" in 2008 from the Cherry Blossom Festival of Southern California. In 2007, CSULA's Charter College of Education named her a "Distinguished Educator" and in 2005 CSLU recognized Dr. Yuen as its 2005 "Distinguished Woman of the Year." Congresswoman Hilda Solis named Dr. Yuen as one of the twelve "Phenomenal Woman" of the 32nd Congressional District in 2004.

Dr. Yuen has published articles in the National Forum of Teacher Education Journal, Diversity in Teacher Education, and the Journal of California Politics and Policy.

"While professional and leadership development is about investing in yourself, we want our generation to understand that it is just as important to invest in our community. We believe that success is empty without concern and compassion for others. By mentoring these future leaders one member at a time, we see ourselves as that vital farm system that helps identify and groom the future 'rock stars' of the Asian American community."

- Stephen Christopher Liu

In 1993, Stephen Christopher Liu knew there was a gap that needed to be filled. He wanted that served professionals in the APA community, a resource that connected members with those with more experience, and a center that housed the vast talents of its members for the betterment of the community.

Armed with an ingenious sense of business and a knack for networking, Liu created the Asian Professional Exchange. Once an idea that was scribbled on a restaurant napkin, APEX has blossomed into a nonprofit professional development organization that serves a vibrant community of more than 9,000 members. Liu served as APEX's President and Executive Director from 1993 to 1997 while simultaneously working full-time. Liu is currently APEX's Founder/Chairman.

The purpose of APEX is to raise awareness about and to Asian Americans through community service, fellowship, charitable fundraisers, cultural events, professional networking and educational seminars. By combining diverse skills and resources to support common goals, APEX strives to benefit not only the Asian American community, but also society at large. Ultimately, APEX hopes to create a unified sense of community among all Asian Americans, here in the United States and abroad.

Marquee events have included the Community Leaders Reception, which is a powerful networking event that bridges young professionals with elected officials, community business leaders and APA legislative staff; the APEX Youth Olympics, which brings together at-risk youth for a day to promote teamwork and diversity within the community; the APEX Career Day and Mentoring Program, which provides a job fair, workshops, leadership training and networking opportunities for new graduates and young professionals; and the APEX Awards Gala that recognizes and honors prominent Asian American who are paving the way for future leaders.
It bears to mention that because of Liu's involvement with the APA community, he created Drinks 'n Chatter (DnC), an informal, nonprofit 4,000 member social gathering group that raises financial support and awareness for mainly Asian American community-based organizations. Since 2004, DnC has helped raise more than $40,000.

APEX's success can be credited to Liu's entrepreneurial spirit and experience in the business and media world. Named early on by Transpacific/Goldsea Magazine as one of the "Top 40 Professionals to Watch," Liu has masterminded a number of innovative enterprises that have changed the face of the business landscape. On his latest venture, Privy.net, Liu serves as the CEO and "Chief Social Capitalist" of the invitation-only niche social network and online/mobile platform that targets a select group of transpacific executives and influential figures. In 1999, Liu was Co-Founder and President of Reelplay, Inc., an early streaming-video enabled B2B digital marketplace that catered to the global film and television industry. For two years in a row, Forbes Magazine named Reelplay as one of the "Top 200 B2B" e-commerce companies in their annual Best of the Web B2B Directory.

Liu owns interests in several other businesses including One Pixel Motion,
a digital branding studio specializing in motion design and interactive media;
HPI Emblem, a vertically integrated China-based emblem manufacturer serving the
U.S. decorated apparel, fashion, promotional products, recognition and uniform markets; and Xing Xing, a Beijing-based venture-backed digital animation company specializing in 3D and Flash animation for film, television and games.

Although his plate seems full, Liu still finds time to serve on the boards and committees of various local community and entertainment organizations. Liu is also executive producer of his first feature documentary film, "Yours Truly, Miss Chinatown" which was funded in part by the PBS-affiliated Center for Asian American Media (CAAM). Most recently, Liu was named an "Emerging Leader" by the Asian Pacific Community Fund and was recognized by the Boy Scouts of America as a "Distinguished Citizen".

Liu received his master of business administration from the University of Southern California in 1998 and earned his bachelor of science of marketing from San Diego State University in 1991.

KCET's education and community outreach division has been recognized by PBS affiliates nationwide as a model of public television's commitment to community engagement. From preschool programs through adult education, KCET provides people of all ages with stimulating and engaging learning opportunities through diverse and innovative television programming, print and online resources, professional development, family education and a variety of multilingual community services.

In 1998, as part of KCET's ongoing commitment to diversity, the station created annual Hero of the Year Awards in celebration of national commemorative heritage months. This initiative recognizes local heroes -- activists, educators, community leaders and visionaries -- the ones doing the critical work that many times goes unrecognized. The project includes a reception and an awards program to salute the accomplishments and services of men and women who are making a significant impact in Southern California communities. These exemplary individuals are introduced to viewers through the production and broadcast of short video profiles. Over the past decade, KCET has had the opportunity to showcase the remarkable stories of over one-hundred and thirty local heroes.
