The 18th Street Arts Center is an alternative arts facility in Santa Monica. The complex is made up of a group of buildings that house arts organizations, performance spaces, galleries, artist studios and residences. Its gallery spaces are open to the public.
In 1989, the center was by Linda Burnham, Tim Miller, and a group of artists who shared similar philosophies and goals. They wanted a place where they could live and work together so they could support each other’s artistic endeavors and also share operating costs.
18th Street Arts Complex has evolved over the years into an umbrella organization that supports artists and organizations through four programs:
The Residency Program provides work and residential space for artists and arts organizations at a subsidized cost. The program acts as an incubator, offering an office co-op, administrative and fundraising consulting, and programs that promote the residents’ work. Since its founding, 18th Street has provided a home to 20 arts organizations and 43 individual artists. Organizations are given five-year residencies and individuals receive 3 years each.
The International Program offers a cross-cultural exchange program for artists from other countries. Those artists live and work at 18th Street Arts Complex for residencies of four months.
The Presenting Program organizes exhibitions, performances, publications, and other opportunities for the artists to share their work with the community.
The Arts Education Program places the resident artists into public schools to teach curriculum-based arts. This program brings extended arts education to public school students while allowing the artists the opportunity to develop their teaching skills and work in their area of expertise.
