Salomón Huerta: Biography
(b. Tijuana, Mexico, 1965; lives and works in Los Angeles, California)
Born in La Colonia Libertad, Tijuana, Salomón Huerta came to Southern California at the age of four and grew up in the projects of Boyle Heights. His mother Carmen cleaned houses for a living and raised five children on her own. Throughout the years, Carmen took photographs of the homes she kept, trying to imagine a place of her own. Twelve years later and with enough money saved, Carmen headed back to Tijuana with a scrapbook of pictures and ideas, determined to see her dream fully realized. Each room of her house is now fashioned after the homes she cleaned in Los Angeles.
Huerta's older sister, Catalina is a waitress at Jen's Diner on Beverly Blvd. She has also managed Huerta's career since he was a teenager. In Huerta's words: "She (Catalina) was out there, networking and cooking for people in the art world- critics, collectors, agents - while I was in the studio… painting."
Huerta was included in the 2000 Whitney Biennial, and in numerous exhibitions around the United States, Europe and Latin America, such as the Gagosian Gallery in London and Studio La Città in Verona
