History of the Evergreen Cemetery
- The Evergreen was officially established, August 23, 1877
- A controversy surrounded the city council regarding the "private speculation in the matters of furnishing places of burial."
- By a vote of 5 to 4, the Evergreen lot was accepted.
- Councilman Thomas Leahy opposed the measure: "Do you want to put our dead in the hand of a monopoly?"
- Evergreen's current manager, Mr. Glen Wong, is a great grandson of Mr. Wong Han Cept, caretaker of the original Chinese cemetery.
- In 1957, the California Department of Consumer Affairs created the Endowment Care Fund. A percentage of the basic cemetery fee has to be allocated to the maintenance and sanitation of its grounds.
