Jacqueline Stevens is the author of Reproducing the State (Princeton,
1999). Reproducing the State shows the history of states since antiquity
basing citizenship on birth and kinship relations. She is working on its
sequel States without Nations, a book that argues the principled and practical
reasons for eliminating all birth entitlements, especially those of citizenship.

Associate Professor in the Law and Society Program at the University of
California at Santa Barbara and lives in Los Angeles. agoraXchange began when
