An acclaimed actor, renowned playwright, and a National Poetry Slam grand champion, Steve's talent and versatility have allowed him to reach out to a wide variety of people, from A-list stars to first-time voters, proving that the word is still alive and well. |

Steve Connell is one of those guys who makes it look easy. He walked into the Nuyorican Café in New York and won his first poetry slam because he said he would. Upon coming back to LA, he won consecutive Grand Slam championships for two different LA slam teams, parlaying that success into helping Team Los Angeles win the National Poetry Slam competition in 2003, and subsequently helping to change the game of how teams make it to the finals stage His extensive theatre background bleeds through into his poetry, bringing a sense of urgency and connection to the listeners around him. He's a performer who will reach out into the crowd and put his hand on your shoulder to make a point. It's that kind of attention to specifics that no doubt made producer Norman Lear, whose "Declare Yourself" non-partisan voting initiative cast slam poets like Steve as the voices calling out to young America, shaking them out of their apathy and into the voting booths. It worked; Declare Yourself registered over a million young voters during the last presidential campaign. Steve's taken that same infectious energy and turned it inward, resulting in the critically acclaimed one-man show "40 Days" and a number of collaborative theatre pieces with fellow poet Sekou (tha Misfit). When given the chance to entertain you, he is a manic gargoyle, barefoot and fearless. Steve Connell writes valentines for the entire world. |
