For Kids: Creating Comics at the Hammer

By Maxwell Strachan

R. Crumb might have wrapped up his much hyped UCLA talk over a week ago, but the buzz just ain't dying. That's especially true at the Hammer Museum, where 826LA is hosting all ages of children on Sunday in an event meant to get those creative juices flowing and transferred onto pages. The inspiration? Why, none other than Mr. R. Crumb himself. But don't worry yourself: this one will be suitable enough for the little ones.

From the Hammer: "Following a brief tour of The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb's Book of Genesis, workshop attendees will write and draw their own creation stories in comic form, learning how to create powerful story-telling with comics and sequential art. Dave Kellett is the Harvey Award-nominated co-author of How to Make Webcomics, and is the cartoonist behind the daily all-ages comic strip Sheldon at SheldonComics.com."

AGES 10-14

Hammer Kids - The Hammer's collaborative workshops, presented with 826LA, are designed for groups of up to 20 students. Reservations are encouraged. Contact workshops@826LA.org or call 310-305-8418.

The Wiz at the Hammer Museum

By KCET Local Events
September 20, 2009

hammer-wiz-i.jpg

Ease on down Wilshire Boulevard this Sunday, and stop by the Hammer to catch a screening of The Wiz. This imaginative 1977 adaptation of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, sets the classic children's tale against an urban backdrop and features an-all black cast including Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, and a young Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. Despite some of the glaring departures from the book (and the 1939 musical starring Judy Garland), the resounding moral remains: there's no place quite like home. You can check out a trailer of the film here.

Tired or heading out to the same brunch spot every weekend morning? Why not instead help Heal The Bay save some beaches this Saturday? Heal the Bay and the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors are the Los Angeles County coordinators for the state of California's Coastal Cleanup Day, bringing out over 10,000 volunteers to cleanup sites each year in L.A. County to over 50 sites along Santa Monica Bay and along inland creeks and waterways. All ages and physical abilities are welcome, and no equipment or experience is necessary. Believe us, you'll feel good afterward.

Free, of course.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T

By KCET Local Events
August 12, 2009

hammer-seuss-i.jpg

This Wednesday at 7:00 PM, the Hammer invites the whole family for a screening the only feature film ever written by Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka "Dr. Seuss"). This fantastical 1953 live-action film pits boy against piano. Bart's dislike of piano lessons results in a dream that turns piano teacher into tyrannical madman, music school into prison. Don't be fooled by a plot that looks at the musical instrument with disdain: this film is a musical. And there is a good chance that this will be the only musical you will ever see with a number entitled "Terwilliker". Classic Seuss.

Script Surgery

By KCET Local Events
August 9, 2009

hammer-scriptsurgery-i.jpg

When you live in Los Angeles, you are never too young to start writing that screenplay. This Sunday, the Hammer Museum, in collaboration with 826LA, will host Script Surgery an event where kids learn about the screenwriting process and the last minute additions that can catapult films into production.

From the Hammer website: "When the script for a Hollywood blockbuster is hanging on for dear life, the EPs call in a script doctor to make everything better. Screenwriters Lindsey Robinson (who has worked at MTV and Lionsgate) and Jon Zack (whose credits include Shrek the Third and the upcoming Puss in Boots) will take things further, teaching students script surgery: how to write entirely new characters, settings, and plot elements for well-loved recent movies."

Kid Rockers

By Matthew Williams
March 4, 2009

The last time I saw a show at the Echo must have been the ill-raging Ass and Titties party that went on every Friday night. The place was filled with local hipsters bumping and grinding to old school hip-hop. The heavy bass and rawness of Biz Markie oddly complimented a room full of Angelenos in their 20s with unwashed hair, plaid shirts, and undersized sweaters.
