What does KCET stand for? |
 |
| |
The call letters KCET stand for: Community Educational Television. The Federal Communications Commission regulations require that each TV station identify itself by call letters and by city of license. Some TV station call letters trace their origins to the slogans of their radio station predecessors. Public television stations have continued this tradition, thus, the branding K for KCET. |

Why does KCET have so many fundraising drives? |
 |
| |

In order to survive and provide a truly high quality program service that is an effective addition to commercial television, we rely on a variety of funding devices. The single most effective device is using our own broadcast air to request viewers help pay for this service. Please know that every donation is critical in helping keep KCET on the air. Nearly half of our financial support, that means 60% of our operating funds, comes from the generosity of donors like you.
Please also note that based on recent analysis of the amount of time dedicated to on-air fundraising for a selected group of 10 stations, KCET dedicates significantly less time on-air to fundraising than stations elsewhere in California and other stations in the country.

What happened to KCET’s Store of Knowledge? |
 |
| |
Unfortunately, the Store of Knowledge chain of retail stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection several years ago and is no longer in business.
Store of Knowledge was a separate for-profit company, of which KCET was an original shareholder. We did not contribute cash to the development of the stores, nor did we receive profits. Our involvement in the stores was the use of our name and our promotion, and the opportunity for a source of funding for KCET’s activities if the company’s stock had become publicly traded, which did not happen. The bankruptcy of this separate company does not have anything to do with the ongoing operations of KCET, the television station.

What is the broadcast range of KCET? |

KCET can be seen on cable or over the air in San Bernardino County, Orange County, Ventura County and Santa Barbara. We are received as far away as the Antelope Valley, Redlands, Bakersfield, San Luis Obispo, Victorville and Oceanside. |

I would like to volunteer at KCET. Who can I call to inquire about the volunteering opportunities? |
 |
| |
Throughout the year, volunteers help KCET in many ways. Your life’s experience, skill, knowledge, and time are valuable to us. There are a variety of talents that we can use in a number of the station’s areas – Member Services, Membership Marketing, Accounting, Production, Fundraising, Event Support, to name a few. Also, when we broadcast fundraising drives, our phone banks are staffed with community-minded organizations and individuals who help us to meet our goals. It is a chance to meet and work with friends and neighbors who all believe in quality television.
If you would like to be a volunteer at KCET, please contact our Volunteer Office at (323) 953-5289.

What is KCET’s Ready To Learn Preschool Education Project? |
 |
| |
It is a comprehensive educational opportunity focused around multiple PBS children’s programs such as Sesame Street, Storytime, and Between The Lions. Over the past few years, the KCET Community Relations and Outreach Department has been committed to motivating young children to learn, particularly children of low income or limited English speaking communities, by enriching the knowledge and educational resources of preschool and elementary educators (family home child-care providers, center-based providers and K-3 teachers). To date, through its Ready To Learn Service, KCET has conducted 111 teacher trainings (both in English and in Spanish), trained 3,650 teachers and reached over 22,000 children in Southern and Central California.
If you’d like more information on KCET’s Ready to Learn and Outreach activities, please call (323) 953-5788.
