December 2009

Dear KCET Supporter,

2009 has been a tumultuous year with monumental changes that have reshaped all of our lives. I believe that one of the most important qualities an organization can possess during times like these is the ability to adapt to new circumstances while maintaining a resolute sense of purpose and commitment to principled values.

Like many non-profit organizations, KCET is facing challenging times, but we are resolute in our commitment to provide content that offers our viewers a priceless perspective on our world. Now, more than ever, public media is needed to provide our society with balanced news and information, cutting-edge science and nature programs, insightful documentaries, provocative arts, cultural and musical broadcasts and so much more. And as technology continues to advance, KCET is determined to produce and deliver vital content over new platforms.

I ask for your continued support of KCET in this time of change, challenge, and opportunity. Let me provide you with some examples of why KCET is deserving of your philanthropic dollars:

At its best, television journalism can be a source of insight and inspiration, a fundamental public service that exposes truth, improves lives, and strengthens communities. During this time when significant changes are happening in our world, The PBS NewsHour, Frontline, Washington Week, and BBC World News, provide informed perspectives, in-depth analysis and journalistic insights that give us a deeper understanding of the issues at hand. Additionally, Tavis Smiley, Bill Moyers and Charlie Rose give us a rare vantage point into the minds of the writers, artists, politicians and business people who help shape and define our civilization.

I am especially proud that KCET provides local programming that adheres to the same high standards. On the heels of its premiere season, our weekly newsmagazine SoCal Connected won six Emmys at the 61st Los Angeles Area Emmy® Awards. In August, the program and its website provided unprecedented coverage of LA county's largest wildfire, and viewers turned to KCET for crucial information about everything from school closings to road closures and evacuations. As journalist Kevin Roderick noted in the online journal LA Observed, "While other TV stations have been skimping on fire coverage, PBS station KCET is doing more than it ever has before."

This past year KCET was also responsible for bringing Inventing LA: The Chandlers and Their Times to viewers here at home and audiences nationwide. This locally produced documentary provides a fascinating look at the history of Los Angeles by telling the story of the family which pioneered and ran the Los Angeles Times.

And, for anyone who was unable to be in Disney Hall to experience the inaugural concert of Gustavo Dudamel, our dynamic new conductor at the LA Phil, KCET offered a front row seat, broadcasting the event directly into millions of homes. This program and many others live beyond the television broadcast and can be viewed online at kcet.org.

Access to information, education, and quality entertainment has always been a hallmark of KCET's philosophy, and today there is a commitment to new technology as people increasingly turn to the internet and mobile devices to keep themselves informed. KCET continues to stay ahead of the curve, pioneering new uses for emerging technology and anticipating new developments. In spring of 2010, KCET will unveil a new website with new original content and easier access to programming information and interactive features that allow users to comment on programs and engage in online discussions.

As this eventful year comes to an end, your support is crucial if KCET is to remain an independent voice, delivering smart, inspiring, content. I ask you to give the most generous contribution you can afford, and please send it today. Your investment does more than just support the exceptional programming you have come to expect from KCET; it strengthens our community by providing a trusted and independent media voice for our region.

Please accept my sincere thanks for your dedicated support and best wishes to you and your loved ones for a healthy and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Al Jerome
